UEFA Champions League: PSG humiliate Villarreal (6-0) and make history!
Paris Saint-Germain outclassed Villarreal in Spain and strengthened their position at the top thanks to an exceptionally clinical first half.
Paris Saint-Germain are continuing their perfect run in the Champions League. Away at the Estadio de la Cerámica, the two-time European champions thrashed Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday, November 3, on matchday four of the league phase.
Paris put the game beyond doubt in just a few minutes. João Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute after capitalising on a poorly cleared ball in the box. Désiré Doué doubled the lead three minutes later, before Senny Mayulu scored in the 13th minute. Fabián Ruiz then made it 4-0 in the 17th minute.
PSG set a new Champions League record
By reaching four goals after just 16 minutes and 2 seconds, PSG became the fastest team to achieve such a feat in Champions League history, according to Opta. Paris’s pressing constantly caused problems for the Yellow Submarine’s build-up play, leaving them unable to regain control of the match.
After the break, Fabián Ruiz completed his brace in the 50th minute, beating Renato Veiga before finding the net past Péter Gulácsi. Substitute David Boly completed the rout in the 78th minute with an individual run followed by a slightly deflected shot. It was his first goal in the competition.
Luis Enrique hails an “impressive” performance
After the match, Luis Enrique summed up the evening to Canal+: “We were impressive all the time.” The Spanish coach particularly highlighted the intensity of his players’ pressing, while urging his squad to remain calm for the rest of the season.
With four wins from four matches and 12 points, Paris sit alone at the top of the standings ahead of Wednesday’s fixtures. The capital club have also extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive Champions League victories and taken another step towards direct qualification for the round of 16.
