PSG: Thomas Meunier disputes Achraf Hakimi's extraordinary record
Former PSG right-back Thomas Meunier has challenged the record attributed to Moroccan Achraf Hakimi, who delivered a masterclass against Le Havre (1-5) in Ligue 1.
On the ninth matchday of Ligue 1, Achraf Hakimi overwhelmed Le Havre. The Morocco international scored a hat-trick, including a free-kick, and provided two assists to help PSG come from behind and beat Les Ciel et Marine 1-5. According to Actu Foot Maroc, Hakimi took the opportunity to become the first defender in history to record five attacking contributions in a single match.
Thomas Meunier challenges it
This impressive record by Achraf Hakimi has been directly challenged by Thomas Meunier, the former PSG right-back from 2016 to 2020. “(You mustn't) lie to the guys,” he commented. He was referring to a similar feat that he had already achieved himself. At the time, he played as a wing-back for Belgium's U17s.
However, the wing-back position is in many respects considered the preserve of a hybrid defender, because of the defensive duties it entails, while also requiring a contribution to attacking play. According to the reliable specialist Stats Foot, Hakimi's record applies to the five major leagues and the last 10 seasons.
