Away from Osimhen and Lookman.. New Nigerian names shining and making a difference in the UEFA Champions League

Nigeria's presence in the 2026 /27 UEFA Champions League extends far beyond established stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, with nine Nigerian footballers registered across six clubs as Europe's elite competition approaches its fourth matchday.

From Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid to Slavia Prague, Porto, LASK and Sabah, the Nigerian contingent combines experienced internationals with emerging talents seeking recognition on the European stage.

As Foot Africa previously highlighted in its analysis of African representation, Nigeria was among the four most represented African nationalities when the league phase squads were announced.

Victor Osimhen: Nigeria's Champions League record holder

Osimhen remains Nigeria's most prolific goalscorer in Champions League history and one of Galatasaray's most important attacking players.

The 27 year old entered the 2026 /27 season having scored 16 Champions League goals, the highest total recorded by a Nigerian footballer.

He has since added another goal during the current campaign, scoring against Lille in October.

Osimhen has made two appearances in the league phase, accumulating 175 minutes, according to UEFA's official statistics.

His importance extends beyond goalscoring, with the Turkish champions relying on his movement, physical presence and ability to stretch opposition defences.

As Foot Africa previously reported, Osimhen established a Nigerian record for direct goal contributions in a single Champions League campaign during the 2025 /26 season.

Galatasaray now face Stuttgart on Tuesday 3 November with the Nigerian striker seeking to maintain his impressive form.

The encounter carries particular significance because the Turkish side have collected just three points from their opening three European matches.

Ademola Lookman: Another Nigerian chasing European success

Ademola Lookman represents Nigeria's other major attacking presence in the competition.

The 29 year old Atlético Madrid forward has already scored once in three Champions League appearances this season, continuing his European career under Diego Simeone.

Lookman's reputation was transformed by his exceptional performances for Atalanta, particularly his hat trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final.

That achievement helped him become one of Africa's most recognised attacking players.

His move to Atletico Madrid in February 2026 provided another opportunity to compete consistently at the highest European level.

As Foot Africa examined following his transfer, Lookman attracted interest from several major European clubs before choosing Atletico.

The Spanish side face Bayern Munich on 3 November giving Lookman another opportunity to influence an important Champions League fixture

However, his inclusion in the starting lineup remains uncertain.

Slavia Prague: Four Nigerians in one Champions League squad

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Nigeria's representation this season concerns Czech champions Slavia Prague.

According to UEFA's official squad list, four Nigerian players are registered with the club:

  • Samuel Isife, 22, midfielder
  • Mubarak Suleiman, 19, midfielder
  • David Moses, 22, midfielder
  • Emmanuel Ayaosi, 22, midfielder

All four have already appeared in the league phase, providing an encouraging example of Nigerian players gaining opportunities outside Europe's traditional leading leagues.

Suleiman has attracted particular attention.

On October 20, he became the first Nigerian teenager to start a Champions League match since Alex Iwobi appeared for Arsenal against Barcelona in March 2016.

As Foot Africa reported, Suleiman achieved the milestone against Fenerbahce, highlighting the significance of his development.

Slavia Prague face Arsenal on Wednesday 4 November, offering their Nigerian contingent another opportunity to compete against one of Europe's leading teams.

Their presence also demonstrates how clubs outside the biggest European leagues can provide important pathways for emerging African footballers.

Zaidu Sanusi, Moses Usor and Christian Nwachukwu complete the Nigerian contingent

Beyond Osimhen, Lookman and Slavia Prague's four players, three other Nigerians are involved in the competition.

  • Zaidu Sanusi – Porto

The 29 year old left back provides experience after several seasons representing Porto in European competitions.

Sanusi has made one Champions League appearance this season, with the Portuguese club preparing to face Napoli on 4 November.

His defensive experience could become valuable as Porto attempt to improve their league-phase position.

  • Moses Usor – LASK

The 24 year old winger is part of an Austrian side competing in the Champions League proper for the first time.

Usor played an important role in LASK's domestic success last season, contributing ten league goals and five assists.

His pace and attacking versatility provide an important option as the Austrian champions prepare to host Slovan Bratislava on 3 November.

  • Christian Nwachukwu – Sabah

At just 20, Nwachukwu represents another promising Nigerian talent.

The forward has made three league phase appearances for Azerbaijan's Sabah, accumulating 73 minutes.

His club travel to Norway to face Viking on 4 November, seeking to strengthen their position in the competition.

From Kanu and Mikel to Osimhen: Nigeria's Champions League legacy

Nigeria's current generation follows a distinguished history in European club football.

According to UEFA's historical records, Nwankwo Kanu remains the Nigerian player with the most appearances in the European Cup and Champions League, excluding qualifying rounds, with 60.

John Obi Mikel follows with 59 appearances.

Both players also enjoyed major European success.

Kanu won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, alongside compatriot Finidi George, while Mikel lifted the trophy with Chelsea in 2012.

In goalscoring terms, Osimhen leads the Nigerian historical standings, followed by Obafemi Martins and Lookman.

What comes next for Nigeria's Champions League representatives?

Matchday four offers several important opportunities for Nigerian players across Europe.

Osimhen and Lookman face high profile opponents in Stuttgart and Bayern Munich while Slavia Prague's young Nigerian contingent prepare to challenge Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Porto, LASK and Sabah have their own qualification ambitions.

The nine registered players represent different stages of footballing development, from established international stars to young talents experiencing the Champions League for the first time.

Their performances also illustrate the increasing variety of routes available to Nigerian footballers seeking European opportunities.

Osimhen and Lookman may command the greatest attention but the emergence of Suleiman, Ayaosi, Isife, Moses, Usor and Nwachukwu suggests that Nigeria's Champions League story is increasingly about its next generation as well as its established stars.
