Barcelona have confirmed that four defenders will miss Tuesday's Champions League encounter against Aston Villa, leaving head coach Hansi Flick facing a significant selection problem ahead of the crucial European fixture.

Jules Kounde, Eric García, Andreas Christensen and Xavi Espart have all been excluded from the 23 man squad announced on 3 November alongside injured attacking players Dani Olmo and Roony Bardghji.

According to Barcelona's official squad announcement, none of the six players will be available for the Matchday 4 encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.

Four defenders missing: Barcelona's injury situation explained

Barcelona's defensive problems have developed over recent weeks, forcing Flick to experiment with alternative solutions.

Kounde continues recovering from an ankle injury, while Espart is also sidelined with an ankle problem.

Meanwhile, Christensen and García remain unavailable because of thigh injuries.

The situation is particularly frustrating for Christensen who recently resumed limited training activities but has not recovered sufficiently to return to competitive action.

Speaking during Monday's pre-match press conference, Flick acknowledged the unusual nature of Barcelona's defensive difficulties.

"It isn't normal. But we're united and I hope we'll get some players back after the international break" the German coach explained.

As Foot Africa previously reported, Barcelona were already facing serious defensive concerns following their 6-1 La Liga victory over Deportivo Alaves on 31 October.

Despite that emphatic win, the absence of several regular defenders remains an important concern ahead of the Champions League clash.

How will Hansi Flick rebuild Barcelona's defence?

The injury situation has forced Flick to consider deploying players outside their preferred positions.

During Saturday's victory over Alaves, midfielder Frenkie de Jong operated in central defence alongside Pau Cubarsi while young Brian Farinas was used in a defensive role.

Both players are available against Aston Villa.

Joao Cancelo, Alejandro Balde and Gerard Martin also feature in the squad, offering the German coach several possible combinations.

However, the final defensive lineup remains uncertain.

Flick has expressed confidence in Fariñas, praising the youngster's intelligence and development in training.

The coach has also highlighted De Jong's willingness to adapt to the team's needs.

The tactical challenge will involve maintaining defensive organisation without sacrificing Barcelona's ability to build attacks from deep positions.

That balance could be especially important against an Aston Villa side capable of exploiting spaces behind an advanced defensive line.

Nicolas Jackson and Ibrahim Mbaye could test Barcelona's weakened defence

The absences may create opportunities for Aston Villa's African attacking players.

Senegal international Nicolas Jackson has established himself as an important attacking option under Unai Emery while compatriot Ibrahim Mbaye provides additional pace and movement in wide areas.

As Foot Africa previously highlighted, Mbaye joined Aston Villa from Paris Saint Germain, seeking greater opportunities to develop at senior level.

Jackson's movement behind defenders and Mbaye's ability to attack open spaces could offer Villa different ways to challenge Barcelona's reorganised back line.

However, their inclusion in the starting lineup has not yet been confirmed.

The English club also have injury problems of their own.

DR Congo international Aaron Wan Bissaka remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Matteo Ruggeri and Amadou Onana are unavailable.

For African football supporters, another notable development is the inclusion of Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim in Barcelona's 23 man squad.

The former Al Ahly prospect has gradually earned opportunities with the first team, as Foot Africa previously reported when he secured the No 29 shirt.

His presence among the substitutes remains possible, although his participation is not guaranteed.
