Despite falling to a narrow defeat, Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had warm words for Mamelodi Sundowns after the two sides met in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.

A Nuno Santos brace did the damage at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, handing the South African champions a 2-1 win. The former Chelsea man was naturally unhappy with the outcome, yet he was quick to recognise the calibre of the team his side had come up against.

After the match ended, the Senegalese star expressed his deep sadness over the loss, yet at the same time, he expressed his great happiness.

Speaking after the match, Mendy opened up about his feelings: "A lot of disappointment. I think we played a great game, but a final is about details, set-pieces, and focus. Up front, I think we could have killed the game in the first half. It is what it is. I'm proud of my team."

Sundowns, though, left a lasting impression on the Senegalese shot-stopper, who rated them as the finest side on the continent and among the toughest he has faced in his career.

"I think we showed good character and spirit here in South Africa against the best team in Africa, definitely. One of the best teams I ever played," Mendy stated. "They have a lot of quality, but we came here and we showed our quality in our football."
