Argentine referee Facundo Tello is set to take charge of the high-stakes clash between Bafana Bafana and South Korea in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa are set to do battle with the Asians at Estadio Monterrey on Thursday (03h00), as they look to seal a historic passage to the knockout stages.

Hugo Broos' men head into the tie sitting at the base of Group A standings with one point, while Korea are in second place having amassed three points after two games.

While Bafana are in desperate need of maximum points, Hong Myung-bo's troops need a point to book their spot in the Round of 32, setting up a nervy affair for both teams.

Now, the world football governing body, FIFA, has appointed Tello, who is known for his strict and no-nonsense approach, particularly in his native Argentina.

The referee went viral globally after brandishing a staggering 10 red cards during a domestic cup final game between Boca Juniors and Racing Club in November 2022.

This came on the heels of a heated brawl amongst the players, causing the match to be abandoned early as Boca lacked adequate personnel to finish the game.

Moreover, Tello has officiated at the UEFA EURO 2024 as a special guest referee, this after making his World Cup debut four years ago in Qatar.

He will be assisted by Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Colombian pair Andres Rojas and Alexandre Guzman will serve as fourth official and reserve assistant referee, respectively.
