OM: Aubameyang’s disappointment after a failed season opener

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang expressed his deep disappointment following OM’s 0-1 defeat to Rennes at the start of the Ligue 1 season.

Although he started the match on the bench, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came on as a substitute Friday night against Rennes. But by then it was already too late for the Gabon international to change the outcome. Marseille fell on the pitch at Stade Rennais (0-1), despite the hosts being reduced to 10 men early in the game.

Aubameyang himself commented on this early setback. The former Arsenal striker is clearly disappointed. “It’s a bitter defeat because we really wanted to start the season well. Unfortunately, we just didn’t play the game we needed to, plain and simple. I think in the first half – at least, that’s my view – I felt there was a bit of apprehension. And in the second half, I think we maybe felt too comfortable. Thinking that we had a man advantage, we thought we’d surely make the difference. We just didn’t push hard enough to attack that defense which, in the end, defended really well tonight,” Aubameyang said.
