Last Thursday, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to shine against Wales in the Nations League. Ahead of the match against Norway, Jorge Jesus defended his captain.

After disappointing against Wales (1-0) on Thursday in the Nations League, Cristiano Ronaldo came in for widespread criticism. Speaking to the press on Saturday evening, Portugal coach Jorge Jesus defended his captain.

"In this match, we had 15 shots inside the box. Of those 15 shots, Ronaldo took seven, two of which were on target. There were many chances to score; as for his performance... he can obviously do better, he was close to scoring. But I have already spoken to him today, and I will see how he feels, whether he will start or begin on the bench. (...) I don't yet know whether Cris will start or not, but one thing is certain: if he is not the first choice, he will come on during the match. Between now and Sunday, I will see how Cris is doing, because he knows his body better than I do, and training will give me an indication on that front. He is a very important member of the national team, whether he plays or not," declared the former Benfica coach.

Tonight, Portugal will face Norway.
