Bruno Fernandes is not expected to feature in Portugal’s trip to Norway on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the Nations League. The Manchester United midfielder is suffering from an injury sustained with his club and has played several matches with the problem.

Jorge Jesus had cast doubt on his captain’s availability on Saturday. The Portugal manager eventually indicated that Fernandes would not play against Norway, after explaining that the player had arrived for international duty with an injury sustained at Manchester United.

“He has arrived with an injury from United and told me that he had been playing with this pain for three matches,” Jesus explained.

According to the manager, the physical problem also affected the midfielder’s performance in the 1-0 victory over Wales.

Jorge Jesus therefore preferred to preserve his captain. The aim is to allow Fernandes to recover before Portugal’s next match against Denmark.

João Neves announced as a starter

Bruno Fernandes did not take part in Portugal’s final team training session before the trip to Norway. Jorge Jesus is expected to start João Neves in place of the Manchester United midfielder.

Fernandes is still part of the Portugal squad called up for this international break, but his inclusion on the list does not mean that he will take part in the match.

Manchester United to monitor his progress

The situation comes as Fernandes occupies a central role at Manchester United. The 32-year-old had started the matches played by the club this season, with the exception of the Carabao Cup meeting against Brighton, during which he came on for the final few minutes.

Manchester United will now have to monitor the progress of the injury during the international break. At this stage, no timeframe for his absence from the club has been announced.
