Premier League: the three nominees for September Manager of the Month

After announcing the players’ shortlist, the Premier League has revealed the three managers nominated for the Manager of the Month award.

A few hours after revealing the eight candidates for the Player of the Month award, the Premier League published the shortlist of managers in contention for the Barclays award for September. Three coaches have been selected: Fabian Hürzeler, Andoni Iraola and Enzo Maresca.

Fans can vote until Monday, September 28, at 12:00 BST. The public vote will then be combined with that of an expert panel before the winner is announced.

Hürzeler, two wins and a draw with Brighton

Fabian Hürzeler finished the month with a record of 3 matches, 2 wins and 1 draw, and a goal difference of +8. Brighton first shared the points with Leeds before thrashing Coventry City 5-0 and then making a major statement by beating Arsenal 3-0. The Seagulls scored nine goals and conceded just one during the period, ending September in third place in the standings.

Iraola, a perfect defensive record with Liverpool

Andoni Iraola also recorded 2 wins and 1 draw in 3 matches, with a goal difference of +3. Under his leadership, Liverpool conceded no goals in the league throughout the month. The Reds beat Ipswich Town and then Bournemouth, while drawing with Fulham.

Defensive solidity has become one of the main arguments behind Iraola’s candidacy, as he has established a team that is difficult to unsettle since taking charge at Anfield.

Maresca, the only one with a perfect record

Enzo Maresca has the best statistical record of the trio, with 3 wins in 3 matches and a goal difference of +4. Manchester City beat Coventry City, Manchester United and then Sunderland. The Citizens are the only Premier League team to maintain a perfect record after five matchweeks.

Maresca has also become the sixth manager in history to win his first five Premier League matches in charge of a club. An ideal start that logically strengthens his candidacy for the September award.

Jakirovic won the award in August

Last month, Sergej Jakirovic was the one to receive the award. The Hull City manager won the August award after two wins in two matches, against Manchester United and Coventry City, without conceding a single goal.

He finished ahead of Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Enzo Maresca. The latter therefore has another chance to claim his first monthly award of the season after already being among the nominees in August.
