Sergej Jakirovic has been named the Premier League Manager of the Month for August after Hull City’s sensational start.

The Premier League has rewarded one of the biggest surprises of the new season. Sergej Jakirovic, head coach of Hull City, has been named August’s Manager of the Month, beating Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Enzo Maresca to the award.

Promoted through the Championship play-offs, the Tigers immediately made their presence felt in the top flight. Hull opened with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United before winning 1-0 away at Coventry City. Two matches, two wins and no goals conceded were enough to place Jakirovic among the four nominees for the monthly managerial award.

Bachir Belloumi among Hull City’s standout performers

Hull’s impressive start has also featured a major contribution from Bachir Belloumi. The Algeria international has been one of the Tigers’ most consistent performers and arguably one of their best players in the opening weeks. He has started all three Premier League matches, playing 253 minutes and registering one assist.

That assist set up Liam Millar for the winner at Coventry. Belloumi played a decisive role in Hull’s second successive league win. Against Aston Villa in the 0-0 draw, he was again one of their most threatening players and struck the crossbar with a curling effort.

After three league matches, Hull remain unbeaten on seven points without conceding a single goal. It is a remarkable record for a promoted side and underlines the impact of Jakirovic’s work.

Manager of the Month meets Player of the Month

The fixture list now provides a fitting storyline. Hull City travel to Chelsea on Saturday, September 12 at 15:00 UK time, with Jakirovic’s side facing a Blues team led by João Pedro, the Premier League Player of the Month for August.

The Brazilian contributed two goals and two assists in the Premier League during August and has quickly become one of Chelsea’s biggest attacking threats. The matchup therefore offers an intriguing contrast: Chelsea’s in-form attack against a Hull defence that has yet to concede in the league.

For Jakirovic and Belloumi, taking another positive result away from Stamford Bridge would further strengthen what has already been an outstanding start to life back in the Premier League.
