Manchester United: Wayne Rooney accuses players of letting Michael Carrick down
Wayne Rooney lashed out at the players of Manchester United after the defeat to Bournemouth (0-3) on Sunday, October 25. The former Red Devils captain criticised them for a lack of commitment and believes they are not meeting the club’s standards, at a time when Michael Carrick’s future remains uncertain.
Wayne Rooney’s anger is not subsiding. After accusing certain players of selfishness following the defeat to Como (1-4) in the Champions League, the former striker once again took aim at the Manchester squad. This time, he directly highlighted the lack of effort on the pitch and the treatment of Michael Carrick.
“These players think they’re better than they are,” he said on the Stick to United podcast. For the former England international, the current performances do not match the demands of a club of this stature.
Rooney denounces a lack of commitment
The former striker criticised the players for walking around on the pitch without putting in the necessary effort. He believes their attitude contrasts with the expectations of the supporters, whose frustration was evident after the defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
“I’d like to go into that dressing room, sit them down and ask them: ‘What are you doing? What kind of performances do you think you’re putting in? Do you think you deserve to wear this shirt?’” he said.
Rooney then used a particularly crude expression to call for a wake-up call: according to comments reported by the British press, he would like to “put a firework up their backsides”.
Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer also deplored the lack of emotion among some players. In his view, several of them appear not to understand the seriousness of the situation. He nevertheless acknowledged that some individuals can be dragged down by the team’s collective difficulties.
Michael Carrick, a coach who meets the club’s standards
Rooney also defended Michael Carrick, his former Manchester United teammate. He pointed out that the coach won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008 during his playing career. According to Rooney, that record gives him a precise understanding of the standards required to succeed at Old Trafford.
“He knows what the standards are to win at this club,” he stressed, criticising the players for failing to meet those demands.
Rooney believes Carrick has been heavily penalised by his group’s performances, although he acknowledges that the coach also bears some responsibility.
The defeat to Bournemouth increased the pressure on the coach. Manchester United conceded three goals without scoring a single one at home, having already suffered a heavy defeat to Como in midweek.

Rooney calls for a collective reassessment
Beyond the players’ attitude, the former England international criticised the squad’s construction. He considers the team too far short of the level required to challenge for the top positions in the Premier League. He particularly questioned certain recruitment decisions and believes a major overhaul of the squad should have been undertaken several years ago.
Rooney believes the club’s executives may have drawn false hope from the improvement in results under Carrick. In his view, the progress previously recorded is not enough to conceal the team’s structural shortcomings.
His comments come during a difficult period for Manchester United. Amid disappointing results, public criticism of certain players and questions over Carrick’s future, the club must quickly rediscover collective momentum. For Rooney, the immediate priority is for the players to take responsibility and demonstrate on the pitch that they deserve to wear the Manchester United shirt.
