Manchester United: Michael Carrick on his way out after defeat to Bournemouth

Michael Carrick is under greater threat than ever at Manchester United. Beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, the Red Devils are going through another sporting crisis that is prompting their directors to consider the departure of their manager.

The defeat to Bournemouth could hasten the end of Michael Carrick’s tenure in the Manchester United dugout. The club’s directors are considering his future after this latest Premier League setback. His dismissal is being seriously considered, although no official decision has yet been announced.

At Old Trafford, the Mancunians delivered a disappointing performance. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, before Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead five minutes later. Evanilson scored the third goal in the 71st minute, sealing Bournemouth’s victory.

This defeat extends Manchester United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions. The club sit 16th in the English top flight, with seven points from eight matchdays, one point clear of the relegation zone. The 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League had already intensified criticism of Carrick.

Bruno Fernandes left on the bench

The handling of captain Bruno Fernandes also fuelled tensions. After criticising his manager’s tactical choices following the defeat to Como, the Portuguese midfielder began the match against Bournemouth on the bench. He did not come on.

Carrick justified the decision on sporting grounds, without providing further details. The result did nothing to ease questions about his choices or the team’s ability to emerge from this poor run.

Eddie Howe among the successors being discussed

Manchester United’s management are already studying possible options in the event of a change of manager. Eddie Howe is among the candidates being discussed to take charge of the team. Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte have also been mentioned among the profiles under consideration.

Questioned after the match, Michael Carrick did not hide his uncertainty.

“It’s a difficult situation, there’s no hiding that. I don’t know what will happen next,” he told Sky Sports.

He also stated that he would continue working as normal, without anticipating a decision from the club’s directors.

The English coach, who had led Manchester United to third place in the Premier League the previous season, now finds himself under considerable pressure. The coming hours could prove decisive for his future at Old Trafford.
