On the third matchday of the Champions League, Manchester United were beaten by Como. Michael Carrick and the Red Devils are going through a worrying period of turmoil. Speaking to the press on Friday, the English coach discussed the club’s current situation as he comes under increasing pressure.

Last Wednesday, Manchester United were outclassed by Como (4-1) in the Champions League. The Red Devils thus suffered their fifth defeat in 11 matches in all competitions this season. A worrying, even exasperating, situation, just eight days after Lisandro Martínez’s controversial comments following the defeat by Atlético de Madrid (2-0).

Michael Carrick aware of the crisis

With 48 hours to go before the match against Bournemouth in the Premier League, Michael Carrick spoke to journalists. He gave a clear-eyed assessment of his club’s worrying situation. “I just want to say a few words, because I think it’s important… Things haven’t gone very well for us recently. I accept the situation we are currently going through. There was a period when I was happy with what we were doing with the team, but we are now going through a difficult spell. It was truly unacceptable for us to play like that. Seeing the supporters feel what we were all feeling was a difficult moment. It is my responsibility to put a team on the pitch capable of taking responsibility. Our supporters are of paramount importance. We have to acknowledge that we have not been good enough; the values of this club have been disregarded for far too many years…,” he said.

Carrick wants to turn the situation around

The English coach remains confident despite the current crisis. “This club has a resilience, whether it’s about bouncing back… It is ingrained. Manchester United is always bigger than any individual. We will continue to instill that within the group. For now, things have not gone well, and we have to show what that means. I have no right to be here. We cannot feel entitled to be here. I am fully aware that we have to work hard and commit ourselves to the club. It is important that we live up to that. Our supporters need to feel it. We will get through this. Respect this football club,” he assured.
