FIFA: major backing for Gianni Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has received major backing in his bid for re-election as head of world football's governing body.

At the extraordinary congress of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), its president, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, officially announced his support for Gianni Infantino. This is a notable turnaround, since the Bahraini.

Indeed, at one point, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa was considered a possible opponent of Infantino. He had recently opposed one of his major projects. “I think we are of course reaffirming our total commitment to supporting you and your leadership as you seek another term as FIFA president,” he said in front of the delegates, in the presence of Infantino.

Infantino awaits his opponents

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who is seeking a fourth term through 2031, will therefore be able to count on the support of the Asian confederation in the election scheduled for next March. This rapprochement comes after several weeks of tensions between the two leaders.

It should be noted that any candidates seeking to succeed him have until November 18 to submit their candidacies.
