Red Arrows coach issues stern warning to Chiefs
Interview
Red Arrows assistant coach Kalililo Kakonje has sent a stern warning to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the return leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second round tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.
The Zambian side head into the encounter with one foot into the group stage, having secured a win in the first meeting on home soil, thanks to a solitary goal from Alassane Diarra.
Arrows would advance to the next stage of the competition with a goalless draw, while scoring the crucial away goal would make Chiefs' efforts to overturn the deficit even more difficult.
Kakonje says his team won't adopt a low-block approach against Fernando da Cruz and his troops, stating that the mandate is to finish off the job as sitting back could prove costly.
“I think at this stage of the competition we cannot look to sit back. We realize we are sitting on a slender 1-0 lead, I think that is not enough in the Confed Cup,” said the Arrows second in command.
"We are not here to defend, we're here to try and complete the job which we started. Yes, we have the advantage, but the team we are playing against is capable of scoring more than one.
"So, we are here to play and try to win. If we can't win, we will try and get a draw, but we're looking to come and qualify from here.
The former Golden Arrows and AmaZulu FC goalkeeper bemoaned the lack of clinical edge in the first leg in Zambia, attributing some of the missed chances to a solid defensive display by Amakhosi.
“I think we missed a lot of chances back home in Zambia, but I will not only attribute that to missing, some of it was purely good defending from the opposition,” Kakonje added.
"So, we have worked on that in training, we've concentrated on our chance conversion. We are able to create, but like I said, our conversion rate is something that we must work on, and we did that in training.
With Arrows unbeaten across all competitions this season, it remains to be seen whether they can overcome Chiefs and book a spot in the group stage of the Confederation Cup.
