Renaldo Leaner outlines plan to overturn Red Arrows CAF deficit
Interview
Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner has unpacked how the Glamour Boys plan to overturn the deficit against Red Arrows in the return leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second round tie on Friday.
Amakhosi head into the match at Moses Mabhida Stadium on the back foot, having suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first meeting that was staged at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium last Saturday.
Chiefs will be forced to dig deep on home soil as failure to make the net bulge would see them crash out of the competition, while conceding the crucial away goal could prove costly.
With the match on the horizon, Leaner has outlined how his team plan to secure a favourable result over the Zambians, stating that restoring parity is of paramount importance, in addition to registering a shut out.
“It's obvious, but our first task is to get one goal and then go for another one, as well as focus on keeping a clean sheet,” the 28-year-old shot-stopper told www.kaizerchiefs.com.
"We have analyzed where we went wrong in Zambia and had a look at how they played and where we might capitalize on some of their weaknesses, so we believe we can succeed on Friday.
The former Sekhukhune United goalie went on to make an appeal to the Chiefs supporters to come out in numbers to get the team over the line, urging them to replicate what Arrows' fans did in Zambia.
“This game is very important for the club. Our goal is to advance to the group stage. We are a big team and we are in a big competition,” added Leaner, who has made three appearances since joining the club in July.
"We need our fans out in numbers to support us because in Zambia their fans made it a bit of an intimidating environment, so we need our brilliant fans to reciprocate for the whole 90 minutes because it won't be easy and our fans are our 12th man who help us a lot to get over the line on the field.
Having reached the group stage of the competition last season, Chiefs will be eager to repeat the feat at the expense of Arrows, who are unbeaten in the current campaign.
