Arda Güler scored against RB Leipzig in the Champions League and amused supporters with an unexpected apology to Kylian Mbappé.

A brief moment of camaraderie marked Real Madrid's emphatic 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday, October 21, in the third matchday of the Champions League. At the centre of attention were Arda Güler and Kylian Mbappé, the protagonists of a moment that was both decisive and amusing. After the match, the young Turkey international chose humour to look back on a goal he had scored apparently at the expense of his French team-mate.

In the 52nd minute, Jude Bellingham sent a cross towards the far post. Mbappé rose to meet the ball with his head and direct it towards the German goal. Just as the Frenchman appeared ready to score, Güler burst in ahead of the line to push the ball into the net. The intervention also prevented defender David Raum from attempting to clear it.

On Instagram, the Madrid player then sent a playful message to his team-mate: “Sorry for stealing your goal. Thank you, Kylian.” Far from creating any tension, the moment ended with the two players celebrating together. Güler also joked to Real Madrid TV, explaining that he knew Mbappé would score another goal during the evening.

Mbappé eventually finds the net too

The Turkish player's prediction came true in the 83rd minute. Mbappé scored Madrid's third goal with a superb right-footed strike from the edge of the box, taking his tally in this European campaign to three goals in three matches. The Frenchman was also credited with the assist for Güler's goal.

Bernardo Silva had opened the scoring before half-time, then Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig before Yan Diomandé completed the scoreline at 4-1. This victory, already discussed through Yan Diomandé's latest goal against his former club, allows the side coached by José Mourinho to make it three wins in as many European matchdays.

The sequence involving Güler and Mbappé above all illustrates the good attacking understanding shown by the Madrid players ahead of a much-anticipated fixture: the Clásico against FC Barcelona on Sunday, October 25. The victory over Leipzig, for which Mourinho named both players in the starting lineup, therefore comes at the perfect time.
