January could hand Manchester United a fresh chance to shore up their defence, and a new left-back looks set to sit right at the top of their shopping list. The Red Devils had been expected to address that position over the summer, especially with Luke Shaw now into the final year of his contract.

Along the way, United were linked with a host of left-backs, among them Newcastle United's Lewis Hall, Manchester City's Rayan Ait-Nouri and Bournemouth's pacey Adrien Truffert.

Ait-Nouri's potential arrival at Manchester United is linked to Luke Shaw's performance

Shaw may have been outstanding last season, but he's now the wrong side of 30 and has shown signs of decline this campaign. United have been left ruing their failure to invest in a successor to the Englishman, with the player having sat out six of the 11 games across all competitions this season.

Word recently emerged that the Old Trafford hierarchy accept they got it wrong by not strengthening at left-back over the summer. The Red Devils currently sit 13th in the Premier League table after seven games, with just a single win to their name.

Man United want to make a move for Ait-Nouri

United are set to renew their interest in Ait-Nouri come January. According to the outlet: "According to exclusive information obtained by Africafoot, Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Algerian international Rayan AĂŻt-Nouri during the upcoming winter transfer window."

"Having struggled since the start of the season, the Red Devils are keen to strengthen their squad and are considering bringing in the Manchester City left-back on loan."

The report goes on to note that the Algerian is hungry for more minutes on the pitch, adding: "According to exclusive information obtained by Africafoot, the possibility of a loan move remains to be seen as the winter transfer window approaches."
