José Mourinho has no intention of portraying himself as a victim against Barcelona. Ahead of Sunday’s Clasico, the Real Madrid coach reiterated his ambition and his trophy record, insisting that his team was capable of winning titles despite being behind in the standings.

Mourinho believes in his ability to win

Asked at a press conference about the Clasico’s value as a test of Madrid’s ambitions, the Portuguese replied directly: “With Mourinho, Real Madrid win trophies.”

During his first spell in charge of the Merengues, between 2010 and 2013, the coach won a Spanish league title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup. However, he did not manage to win the Champions League. This time, Mourinho wants to continue his team’s progress, believing they are still far from their best level.

Barça remain the benchmark, but Real are improving

Barcelona go into this match with nine wins in nine La Liga games, while Real Madrid are six points behind after defeats to Atlético de Madrid and Real Betis. Madrid have nevertheless regained positive momentum since the international break, with several victories against Villarreal, Roma, Sevilla and RB Leipzig.

Mourinho nevertheless refuses to compare his team directly with Hansi Flick’s side, whom he considers further along in their collective development:

We are far from being a fully developed team. We are in the early stages, during which the coach is getting to know his squad and setting its direction.

Real will nevertheless have to cope without Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended for this fixture. The Clasico is therefore shaping up to be a major encounter for both teams, with a confident Barça in the league and a determined Real Madrid intent on showing that they can still compete for titles.
