El Clásico is far more than a match between two giants of Spanish football. For more than a century, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have been engaged in a rivalry that has featured some of the greatest legends the game has ever known. Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Busquets and Lamine Yamal have all written their names into the history of this fixture.

Messi, El Clásico’s top scorer and assist provider

With 26 goals scored against Real Madrid, Lionel Messi holds the record for the most goals in El Clásico history. The Argentine is ahead of Alfredo Di Stéfano and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are both credited with 18 goals. The former Barça No. 10 is not distinguished solely by his goals. He is also El Clásico’s all-time leading assist provider, with 14 assists.

Karim Benzema completes the expanded podium with 16 goals, ahead of Raúl, who scored 15. Cristiano Ronaldo does, however, hold another record: that of the player to have scored in the most consecutive Clasicos, finding the net in six straight matches between the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

Busquets has the most appearances, Yamal is the youngest goalscorer

In terms of appearances, Sergio Busquets leads the way with 48 Clasicos played. Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos follow with 45 matches each, while Karim Benzema has 43. Busquets also holds the record for the most wins in this fixture, with 23 victories.

On October 26, 2024, Lamine Yamal made history by becoming the youngest goalscorer in a Clasico. He was 17 years and 105 days old at the time, in FC Barcelona’s 4-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu. At the other end of the scale, Alfredo Di Stéfano remains the oldest goalscorer in this fixture: he was 37 years and 164 days old when he scored on December 15, 1963.

Other records to remember

Biggest win: Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 11-1 in the Copa del Rey on June 19, 1943.

Fastest goal: Karim Benzema scored after just 21 seconds on December 10, 2011.

All-time record: Real Madrid had recorded 106 official wins against 106 for Barça, along with 52 draws, before the January 2026 meeting.
