Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup in the second preliminary round after suffering a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

The Glamour Boys had to dig deep to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first meeting, with Thulani Mabaso testing Charles Kalumba in the 11th minute, but the goalie was equal to the task.

With Arrows adopting mid-block approach, Chiefs were able to create numerous clear-cut scoring opportunities, although failed to use them to great effect, as the two teams were level at the break.

Fernando da Cruz called upon Mfundo Vilakazi 13 minutes after the restart, before Pule Mmodi saw his tame effort comfortably land in the hands of Kalumba in the 63rd minute.

Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock three minutes later as Bradley Cross headed home a delightful ball delivered by substitute Vilakazi from a free-kick on the far side.

Vilakazi brought the spark and energy in the Chiefs attack with great runs on the right flank, setting up Mduduzi Shabalala, who squandered a chance as his shot flew over the bar in the 77th minute.

Shabalala had a chance to score the go-ahead goal once again after substitute Ethan Chislett pounced on a mistake from Arrows, putting through the academy graduate on goal, but Kalumba came clutch with a big save.

Amakhosi fashioned another chance four minutes from time, with Vilakazi at the heart of the attack yet again, creating an opportunity for Asanele Velebayi, who lacked composure and sent his effort over the bar for a one-all draw.
