Real Madrid: Kylian Mbappé’s account suspended in China!

Kylian Mbappé’s account on Xiaohongshu displays a posting restriction, while the controversy surrounding a video has led to several commercial partnerships being terminated in China.

Kylian Mbappé’s digital presence in China has suffered another setback. On Tuesday, October 27, the account associated with the Real Madrid forward on Xiaohongshu indicated that he could no longer post for “violating community rules,” AFP reports.

A restriction on an account followed by 1.1 million users

Also known as RedNote, the platform is an important communication channel for the Frenchman. His account there has around 1.1 million followers, in addition to one million followers on Weibo.

The restriction came after a video circulated in which the captain of the France national team appears to jokingly refer to an edit associating his face with that of a leader he presents as a Chinese dictator. The sequence was interpreted as a reference to Mao Zedong. AFP initially said it had been unable to confirm its authenticity.

Several brands end their partnerships

The matter has now gone beyond reactions on social media. Dongpeng, a beverage specialist, and Mengniu, a dairy group, announced the immediate termination of their relationships with the player. Cheese manufacturer Milkground also announced a similar decision, according to information reported by AFP.

The companies cited remarks and behavior that offended national sentiment. These decisions extend the loss of Chinese commercial partners already announced for the Madrid forward.

A commercial issue separate from the sporting situation

The consequences affect both advertising contracts and the player’s ability to address his local audience directly. During the 2026 World Cup, Dongpeng advertisements using AI-generated images of Mbappé had been widely broadcast in China.

The amount of revenue involved was not specified in the announcements cited. It would therefore be premature to quantify the losses. At this stage, the digital restriction and the termination of commercial partnerships primarily weaken his position in this market, the day after he finished second to Harry Kane in the Ballon d’Or.
