El Clásico: Barcelona could face sanctions over the insulting of a Real Madrid player
Questions about the team's recent slump in form have already begun to surface in the wake of Sunday's loss to Los Blancos.
Now, the fallout from the Clasico defeat may reach beyond matters on the pitch. An incident involving Eduardo Camavinga has reportedly drawn the attention of La Liga.
What exactly happened?
As reported by The Athletic, La Liga is set to bring an alleged assault on the Madrid midfielder before the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation. La Liga has reopened the file on the recent Clasico incidents, after deciding to file an official complaint with the Disciplinary Committee of the Spanish Football Federation regarding an alleged assault on Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
The incident occurred in the aftermath of Kylian Mbappe's winning goal for Real Madrid, a goal set up by Camavinga himself. As the Royal team's players celebrated near the Barcelona fans, a spectator appeared waving a flagpole toward the French player.
The situation prompted his teammates to intervene and pull him away from the stands, while referee Juan Martinez Munuera documented the disturbances in his official match report. A water bottle and a Coca-Cola can were also thrown from the stands without hitting the player, which required a stadium announcement and a temporary stoppage lasting two minutes.
These developments come at a time when Barcelona are enduring a difficult week on all fronts, after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and to Real Madrid in La Liga. The defeat to the Royal team on Sunday had already raised questions about the team's dip in form, but its repercussions may now extend beyond the pitch.
