Kylian Mbappé apologised to the Chinese people after controversial remarks about a meme comparing him to Mao Zedong. The Real Madrid forward acknowledged making clumsy comments and said he regretted the reactions they provoked in China.

In a statement published on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the France captain spoke in three languages: Chinese, French and English. He intends to put an end to a controversy that has taken on diplomatic and commercial dimensions, with China's state television announcing the suspension of LaLiga broadcasts.

“During a recent interview, I reacted to an image of myself in which I was depicted. My comment was unfortunate, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and within the Chinese community around the world,” the player acknowledged in his message, signed in Paris.

“I am sincerely sorry”

Mbappé also wanted to reaffirm his respect for China and its people.

“I apologise to everyone who was offended by my remarks. That was absolutely not my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry,” he said.

At the root of the controversy was a clip in which the Frenchman discussed the memes that make him laugh. In particular, he cited an image using his face to compare him to Mao Zedong, the former Chinese leader.

“The one that made me laugh the most is the one where they use my face on a Chinese dictator. I often use it with my friends,” he explained.

These remarks sparked strong reactions in China. LaLiga also responded to the matter, with Javier Tebas apologising to the Chinese people on behalf of the organisation and announcing efforts to restore dialogue with its local partners.

With this statement, the Madrid forward acknowledges the offensive nature of his words and is attempting to ease tensions. The consequences of this affair for the broadcasting of the Spanish league in China remain a major concern for LaLiga and its clubs.
