2026 Ballon d’Or: Lamine Yamal in the shadow of the Spanish winners

Spanish football was in the spotlight at the 2026 Ballon d’Or. However, not all of its figures enjoyed the same evening. While national team coach Luis de la Fuente was named the best men’s coach of the year and Unai Simón also received an award, Lamine Yamal did not win a major prize in the senior categories.

Luis de la Fuente, recognition for collective work

Luis de la Fuente’s triumph was among the highlights of the ceremony. The Spanish coach finished ahead of Luis Enrique, Mikel Arteta, Lionel Scaloni and Vincent Kompany.

After receiving his award, he refused to present the achievement as an individual accomplishment. “This is not an individual award, but a tribute to the team I lead,” he explained. His remarks highlight the importance of the collective in this recognition, while Unai Simón also contributed to the distinctions earned by the Spanish representatives.

The Kopa Trophy, a consolation for Lamine Yamal?

For Yamal, the Kopa Trophy confirms his place among the most notable young players of his generation. However, this distinction remains different from the main awards given to senior players, among whom he was not honoured this year.

This contrast does not mean that his season went unnoticed. Above all, it shows that recognition for young talents and that for established players belong to distinct categories. For the young talent at FC Barcelona, the challenge will be to continue his development and turn his potential into performances impressive enough to compete consistently with the biggest names in world football.
