Manchester United: why Michael Carrick is staying
Manchester United: why Michael Carrick is staying

Manchester United has not yet made a decision on Michael Carrick’s future. Despite discussions about his dismissal, the club has chosen to keep its manager, held back by the cost of a departure, uncertainty over his potential successor and a schedule that still offers some room for manoeuvre.

The defeat to Bournemouth (0-3) has revived questions about Carrick’s situation. The directors have considered several scenarios without reaching a definitive decision. The English manager therefore remains in charge, with a trip to Chelsea that could influence what happens next.

The first obstacle to replacing him is financial. Parting ways with Carrick and then recruiting a new manager would increase the cost. Eddie Howe is among the names being considered, but his arrival would require negotiations with Newcastle. Such an operation could prove costly for the Red Devils.

Choosing his successor is also a problem. The available candidates would not have unanimous support within the club’s management, where opinions are reportedly divided. In the absence of a consensus, Manchester United prefers to wait rather than rush into an appointment.

Chelsea, a test for Carrick

The schedule could offer the directors another option. The club is considering waiting until the next international break before making a definitive decision. This delay would allow a new manager, in the event of a change, to better prepare for his arrival and get to know the squad.

In the meantime, Carrick must re-energise his group. A meeting with the players and members of the coaching staff reportedly provided an opportunity to address recent tensions and try to strengthen unity in the dressing room.

The trip to Chelsea on Saturday is therefore shaping up to be important for the rest of his tenure. A positive result could give him some breathing room. Another poor performance, however, would revive discussions about his future.

For now, Manchester United is opting for caution. Keeping Carrick does not mean that his position is secure in the long term. The next results will help clarify the directors’ decision: continue with him or pave the way for a new manager.
