Real Madrid: Chinese government reacts to Mbappé's apology

Hours after Kylian Mbappé apologized, the Chinese government reacted to the France captain's apology. This came particularly after the controversy sparked by his comments about Mao Zedong.

Questioned by an AFP journalist about Beijing's position and whether Real Madrid might issue a statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that the authorities appreciated the apology presented by the parties concerned. When pressed by a British journalist about a possible easing of the boycott targeting Mbappé, Guo Jiakun simply repeated his initial response. “I have already answered this question. We appreciate the apology presented by the person concerned,” he said.

The spokesman did not announce any lifting of the measures targeting Kylian Mbappé and did not specify whether Beijing was still awaiting a public apology from Real Madrid.

The French federation is closely monitoring the situation

Since the controversy erupted, the France team has been keeping a close eye on the matter, as it too has contracts with the Chinese market. According to information from L'Équipe, the federation explained that there should be no problem because these contracts “concern the France team as a whole.”
