Spain: Manolo González sacked by Espanyol Barcelona
Manolo González is no longer the coach of Espanyol Barcelona. The Catalan club officially announced his departure on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following the team’s elimination from the Copa del Rey by Sestao River.
Espanyol’s run in the Copa del Rey has come to an earlier-than-expected end. The Barcelona club suffered a surprise elimination against Sestao River, a team from Spain’s fourth division, after a spectacular match that ended 4-3 after extra time. This poor result hastened Manolo González’s departure.
In a statement, Espanyol announced the end of its collaboration with the Spanish coach. The club thanked him for the work he had done over all these years and wished him every success in his future projects.
A coach who had taken Espanyol back to La Liga
Appointed head coach of the first team in March 2024, Manolo González had successfully guided Espanyol to promotion to La Liga at the end of the 2023-2024 season. The coach then ensured the Catalan club’s survival in Spain’s top flight during the 2024-2025 campaign.
His spell was therefore marked by significant results for a club seeking to re-establish a lasting place among the best teams in Spain. But the elimination from the Copa del Rey changed the situation.
Espanyol must now find a new coach to continue its season. The name of Manolo González’s successor is still awaited.
