“I hoped to prevent such an exceptional player from retiring without a Ballon d’Or”: Paolo Condò explains his vote for Mbappé
Italian journalist Paolo Condò placed Kylian Mbappé at the top of his vote for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. His choice was based on the Frenchman’s performances, but also on his desire not to see him end his career without this individual distinction.
“By placing Kylian Mbappé at the top of my list, I hoped to prevent such an exceptional player from retiring without a Ballon d’Or,” the Italian journalist explained.
This reasoning goes beyond assessing a single season. In the absence of a candidate he considered indisputable, Paolo Condò chose to look beyond the performances of the year. In particular, he took into account the possibility of seeing a player of Mbappé’s calibre end his career without winning the trophy.
Harry Kane also featured in the discussion
The journalist also mentioned Harry Kane, whom he considers an outstanding striker. In his view, the age of the England international, who is 33, may have influenced the assessment of his candidacy.
“Harry Kane is a formidable striker in every respect, but his career probably also played a role in deciding this Ballon d’Or, given that he is 33,” he said.
Paolo Condò also discussed Lamine Yamal’s future. In his view, the young Spain international could dominate the next editions of the Ballon d’Or. He named Michael Olise as a potential rival to the Barcelona player in the years to come.
Through his vote, the Italian journalist therefore favoured Kylian Mbappé, while placing his choice within a broader reflection on the careers and legacies of great players.
