Spanish federation sanctions FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona have been sanctioned by the Spanish Football Federation following a complaint from Atlético Madrid concerning their attempts to sign Julián Álvarez. According to local media, the Catalan club will have to pay a €602 fine for contacting the Argentine striker without first informing Los Colchoneros in writing.
Atlético had reported Barça’s approach
During the last summer transfer window, Barça were looking for a successor to Robert Lewandowski and had made Julián Álvarez a priority target. The Catalan club said it had offered €100 million, but Atlético Madrid reportedly did not even respond to the offer.
The situation became tense when the Madrid club’s directors learned that their rival had spoken with the Argentine international without prior authorization. Believing that these actions did not comply with the regulations, Atlético filed a complaint against Barça.
A sanction based on the federation’s regulations
The Spanish Federation ultimately ruled to impose a €602 fine on FC Barcelona. The sanction is based on Article 133 of the federation’s regulations, which concerns contacting a player under contract without prior written notification to his club. Atlético had also referred the matter to FIFA, but the international body said it did not have jurisdiction to handle the case.
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Julián Álvarez remains under contract with Atlético Madrid until the summer of 2030. The 26-year-old striker had also attracted concrete interest from Arsenal, but he reportedly turned down that possibility during the summer. Recently, the Argentine apologized to Atlético supporters for his comments related to the World Cup, acknowledging that he had made a mistake in both his words and the timing of his remarks.
