Chemsdine Talbi sent Sunderland into the English League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, despite Brentford’s threatening comeback.

Three goals ahead, then a tense finish: Sunderland secured qualification against Brentford (3-2) on Wednesday, 28 October, at the Stadium of Light. Chemsdine Talbi opened the scoring before Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana extended the lead in this round-of-16 tie.

Talbi finishes on the line in the 26th minute

The Moroccan international was the first to find a way through. After a run from Jules Ahoka, Jocelin Ta Bi unleashed a shot that Hákon Valdimarsson failed to push far enough away. As the ball headed towards goal, Talbi followed it into the net by intervening on the line.

That opportunistic effort gave the Black Cats the lead in the 26th minute.

Already involved in the opening goal, the Ivorian winger then set up Tutierov in the 29th minute before finding Fofana at the far post for a winning header in the 39th. Sunderland were 3-0 up.

Brentford nevertheless reduced the deficit through Callum Wilson before half-time (42nd minute), then Igor Thiago in stoppage time (90+4). The visitors were unable to snatch an equaliser.

A second goal in this competition for Talbi

Signed from Club Brugge in summer 2025, Talbi has now scored twice in this edition of the competition. He had already found the net in the win over Hull City in the previous round.

This latest goal gives him something to celebrate after a period of limited playing time in the Premier League. Above all, it came alongside Régis Le Bris’s side securing their place in the quarter-finals.
