Signed in the summer of 2025 to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left for Manchester City, Lucas Chevalier could already leave Paris Saint-Germain. According to French daily L’Équipe, the situation of the 24-year-old goalkeeper is unsatisfactory, and a departure as early as January could be considered if his playing time does not improve.

Safonov has moved ahead in the pecking order

Arriving from LOSC, Lucas Chevalier was expected to play a major role in goal for Paris Saint-Germain following Donnarumma’s departure. But his difficult start changed the situation. Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov took advantage of the situation to establish himself as the coach’s first choice.

Since then, Chevalier has struggled to get the playing time he expected. This situation could prompt him to seek a new destination in order to regain greater continuity and confidence. According to the information reported, the goalkeeper would be ready to consider leaving if his situation does not change during the autumn. PSG would also be willing to consider offers.

A contract until 2030, but an uncertain future

Lucas Chevalier is nevertheless under contract with PSG until the summer of 2030. Any potential transfer would therefore require discussions between the various parties, despite the reported openness to a departure. The sporting situation in Paris could also influence the decisions to come.

After five rounds of Ligue 1, PSG have eight points and sit sixth in the standings. The club, which won Ligue 1 and the Champions League the previous season, have therefore made a less convincing start to the campaign.

Our analysis

The Chevalier situation illustrates the consequences of competition that quickly became unfavorable to the French goalkeeper. Signed to succeed Donnarumma, he has failed to establish himself as a regular starter and now sees his future in Paris called into question.

A departure in January nevertheless remains conditional. The priority will be to see whether Chevalier can regain playing time before the winter transfer window. If Safonov retains his status as the number one and PSG remain open to negotiations, a separation could become a concrete option, despite a contract running until 2030.
