Gian Piero Gasperini could not resist teasing José Mourinho. At a press conference ahead of the Champions League clash between Roma and Real Madrid, scheduled for this Wednesday at the Stadio Olimpico, the Italian coach praised his counterpart’s career before ironically highlighting his ability to convince clubs to spend significant sums to sign top-level players.

Gasperini acknowledges Mourinho’s merits

The two coaches have faced each other several times, notably when Mourinho was in charge of Inter Milan and then Roma, while Gasperini coached Genoa and Atalanta. The Italian coach acknowledged the strength of Mourinho’s Inter, which he considered particularly difficult to beat.

He also recalled the progress made by his Atalanta, which eventually began competing with Roma for Champions League qualification places. Gasperini did not fail to pay tribute to the Portuguese coach’s honours, considering him one of the most successful managers in history.

A dig at his ability to recruit stars

It was then that the Italian coach delivered his sharpest remark.

If I had to retain one thing, it would be his talent and empathy in managing to attract extraordinary players and convince clubs to spend considerable sums to sign them. It’s fantastic.

The context gives this statement a particular flavour: Real Madrid are looking to assert themselves against a Roma side boasting numerous top-class individuals. The Champions League meeting should allow Gasperini to assess his team’s progress against a benchmark opponent.
