AS Roma: after the defeat, Gian Piero Gasperini takes another swipe at José Mourinho
After AS Roma's defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday evening in the second matchday of the Champions League, Gian Piero Gasperini made no secret of his frustration.
Although the Italians had taken the lead, they ultimately let slip a match they appeared to have under control (3-4). They lost because of their difficulties defending set pieces. “We lacked cutting edge and were completely passive on corners. We lost a match we were leading,” Gian Piero Gasperini said.
The Italian coach was particularly keen to respond to José Mourinho's comments. The Special One felt that Roma had failed to maintain their intensity after the first hour of play. “If there was one team that was frustrated, it was them. We outplayed them in every area of the game. For 80 minutes, we were superior to Real Madrid in every aspect,” he replied.
Gasperini acknowledges his team's weaknesses
The other issue addressed by the coach last night was his players' weakness, which cost AS Roma dearly. “We are vulnerable in these advantageous situations. It also happened to us several times last year. We lacked character and failed to understand that it was the crucial moment of the match,” he explained.
