South Africa: Lebohang Maboe ruled out for the international break

Lebohang Maboe will not take part in South Africa's camp for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder suffered an ankle injury with his club this weekend and was withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad after undergoing medical examinations.

Having arrived at the Johannesburg camp on Sunday evening with ankle pain, Maboe underwent examinations on Monday. The scan confirmed that he would be unavailable for the camp and the entire FIFA window.

“He twisted his ankle while playing for Kaizer Chiefs and, after undergoing a scan, he will be unavailable for the current camp and this FIFA window,” explained South Africa national team doctor Dr Tshepo Molobi on the website of the South African Football Association.

South Africa are preparing to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. Bafana Bafana will host Guinea on Saturday afternoon at Johannesburg's Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.

To replace Maboe, head coach Pitso Mosimane sent a call-up to Tshepang Moremi, an Orlando Pirates player. The young midfielder could join the squad in the coming hours ahead of this opening qualifying fixture.
