Sundowns ease past Gallants as Mailula maintains scoring form
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in their Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Brazilians made their intentions clear early in the match as Fawaaz Basadien saw his his left-footed shot saved by Emile Lako in the fourth minute.
Gallants goalie was once again called into service four minutes later, this time by Brayan Leon, but he stood tall in between the sticks.
Sundowns eventually broke the deadlock through Malibongwe Khoza, who made the net bulge in the 21st minute after a scramble in the Bahlabane Ba Ntwa box.
While Masandawana went into the interval with a one-goal cushion, they were a man down as Khuliso Mudau was stretchered off injured in the 38th minute.
The African champions picked up from where they left off as Cassius Mailula's chip over Lako was cleared en route the net five minutes into the second half.
Mailula, however, found the back of the net with a powerful shot in the 68th minute, making it back-to-back goals in the Betway Premiership.
Sundowns held firm for maximum points, and climbed to third place on the log standings, level on seven points with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
Miguel Cardoso's men will now turn focus to the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final clash against Golden Arrows at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
