The date of the upcoming El Clásico might be postponed!
One of the biggest fixtures in Spanish women's football could be reshuffled at the eleventh hour, and the weather is to blame.
Barcelona issues an official statement regarding El Clásico
Barcelona have made an official request to push back Sunday's Liga F Clasico against Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou, asking for kick-off to be shifted from 17:00 to 19:00 local time. In the club's view, those extra two hours would give them the breathing room needed to guarantee the stadium is fully up and running and safe for everyone, while also smoothing out travel and entry for the fans making their way there.
The backdrop to all of this is a nasty stretch of weather sweeping across Catalonia. Forecasters are warning of heavy — possibly torrential — rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds, which has raised real concerns about transport, getting people into the ground and simply keeping the venue operational in time for the match.
Barcelona have made it clear they are staying in constant touch with Liga F and the relevant competition authorities as they keep a close eye on how things develop. Nothing has been signed off yet, though: the final call will come on the morning of October 4, once it is clear how the conditions are shaping up and what the competent authorities advise.
The club has pledged to keep members and supporters in the loop through its official channels. As things stand, the match is still set for 17:00 at Spotify Camp Nou, with Barcelona's two-hour delay request hanging in the balance.
It is also worth remembering what is at stake here. This is a showdown between the top two sides in Liga F after five rounds of action. Barcelona sit pretty at the summit with a flawless 15 points and a 21:2 goal difference, while Real Madrid occupy second place on 13 points, courtesy of four wins and a draw.
