Zlatan Ibrahimovic slammed World Cup officials on Saturday following the controversial VAR decision that denied Iran a late victory against Egypt.

The drama in Group G did not finish when the final whistle blew at Lumen Field. Following the 1-1 draw that sent Egypt through to the Round of 32 and left Iran agonizing in third place, football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic launched a scathing attack on the match officials and the video assistant referee (VAR) system.

The controversy erupted in the final seconds of the match when Shojae Khalilzadeh's potential match-winning goal was chalked off for a marginal offside.

Speaking to the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, the famously outspoken striker expressed his deep frustration with how technology is altering the beautiful game.

"This is exactly why people are losing faith in VAR.. They tell us it is there to fix clear and obvious errors, yet it keeps creating massive controversy on the biggest stage in football. This is completely unacceptable" Ibrahimovic stated.

Accusing officials of stealing a dream

The Swedish star revealed he watched the replays multiple times and remained completely unconvinced by the refereeing outcome. He argued that reversing a decision of such immense magnitude requires absolute certainty rather than digital guesswork.

Ibrahimovic emphasized the emotional devastation inflicted on the Iranian team and their supporters who believed they had secured a historic qualification milestone.

He stressed that a room full of officials effectively wiped out that collective joy in a matter of seconds transforming a sporting dream into a nightmare. He called for strict accountability, insisting that referees must not be allowed to hide behind technological tools when making flawed judgements.

The heavy cost of marginal decisions

Reflecting on the unique pressure of the global tournament, Ibrahimovic pointed out the immense sacrifices made by players and fans alike. With the tournament occurring only once every 4 year, he noted that a single shocking decision can instantly ruin months of intense preparation and hard work.

He concluded his critique by demanding a significant lift in officiating standards stating that the sport, the players and the fans deserve far better.

The result leaves Group G in a fascinating position, with Belgium claiming the top spot on goal difference ahead of Egypt while Iran faces a nervous wait to see if their 3 point will be enough to secure passage as a best third placed team.
