U-20 Women’s World Cup: One in four for Africa after the group stage

A mixed bag for the continent. Of the four African representatives, only one will reach the round of 16 of the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria: the experienced side!

The Falconets had a close call, but they made it through. The tournament got off to a poor start, however, with a 0–2 defeat in their opening match against Spain. But they scraped a hard-fought 0–0 draw against China to keep their hopes alive. On matchday three, they thrashed New Caledonia 10–1.

Benin: A tough learning curve

This is the first time the U20 Amazones have taken part. They opened their campaign with a creditable 2–2 draw against Mexico, thanks to a brace from Romaine Gandonou. Things got tougher after that, with a heavy 0–8 defeat to Argentina, followed by a 1–4 loss to Poland. Benin finished bottom of Group A but come away with valuable experience.

Tanzania: Too young to make an impact

Like their Beninese counterparts, the Tanzanian side were making their debut at the U20 Women’s World Cup. They started with a 1–4 defeat to Brazil, followed by a 1–5 loss to England, and finished with a 0–6 defeat to Canada. Bottom of Group B, Tanzania are out of the tournament.

Ghana: Hopes quickly dashed

The Black Princesses had responded well. After a 0–3 defeat to Ecuador in their opening match, they bounced back by beating South Korea 3–1. But their final match against France proved insurmountable. A 0–4 defeat meant elimination. Ghana finished bottom of Group C

Nigeria is now the only African team left in Poland. The Falconets are set to face England in the round of 16.
