World Cup 2026: Argentina faces possible FIFA sanction ahead of the final!

Despite securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup final, Argentina may find itself embroiled in an off-field controversy involving the Falkland Islands.

Argentina’s qualification for the World Cup 2026 final could be overshadowed by an incident beyond the pitch. Following their victory over England (2-1), several Albiceleste players celebrated with a banner reading: “The Falklands are Argentine”—a gesture that could prompt FIFA to launch disciplinary proceedings.

The international governing body is expected to first review the match officials’ reports before making a decision. FIFA regulations strictly prohibit political messages on the football field, which could put the Argentine federation and certain players at risk of sanctions.

However, Argentine president Javier Milei attempted to defuse the situation. “We must not mix” football and the territorial dispute, he said, adding: “The Falklands are recovered through shrewd diplomacy, not cheap displays of patriotism.” He concluded: “We are making enormous progress on the diplomatic front (...) but let’s not mix things up, it’s only a football match.”
