World Cup 2026: Atlas Lions return to Morocco

They have come home. In the early hours of Sunday morning, around 2 a.m., the Atlas Lions landed at Rabat-Salé Airport. A special flight from Boston brought the squad back after their quarterfinal exit from the 2026 World Cup against France.

Under the guidance of Mohamed Wahbi, Morocco delivered another impressive World Cup campaign. They started with a tough 1-1 draw against Brazil, followed by victories over Scotland (1-0) and Haiti (4-2). With 7 points, the Moroccans finished second in their group at the end of the first round.

The knockout stage showcased Morocco’s world-class pedigree. In the round of 16, drama unfolded to the very last moment against the Netherlands, with the Atlas Lions booking their ticket through a penalty shootout. They then stormed past Canada 3-0 in the quarterfinals, with a brilliant brace from Azzedine Ounahi.

Morocco was the only African representative to make it this far, but the dream ended in the quarterfinals against Les Bleus, losing 2-0 in Boston. After their epic semifinal run in 2022, this journey once again proves that Morocco has become a force shaking up the world of football.
