Mexico’s legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will mark the end of his international career and his final tournament as a professional footballer.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the 40‑year‑old reflected on his deep bond with the national team and his decision to step away from the game.

The Mexico national team has always been my compass, my guiding force both in my career and in my life. I cannot imagine my career without the national team. I don’t know what it would have been without it.

As my time with the national team comes to an end, I no longer see any meaning in football. I don’t see any reason to keep playing. I have enjoyed every single moment here. I gave everything I had on the pitch. I leave with peace in my heart, my head held high, and immense pride in having lived through this experience.

Ochoa will bow out on home soil, with the tournament co‑hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. For a player who has been a symbol of resilience and consistency for El Tri, it is a fitting farewell. His presence between the posts will be missed, but his legacy as one of Mexico’s greatest goalkeepers is already secure.
