South Africa delivered a sensational performance by defeating South Korea (1-0) on Wednesday, in the final matchday of Group A at the 2026 World Cup.

The game remained evenly poised for a long stretch, but everything changed in the 63rd minute. Well picked out inside the box, Thapelo Maseko seized on a gap left by the South Korean defense to fire a pinpoint shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Kim. South Korea pressed relentlessly until the end, especially after Son Heung-min was introduced after halftime, but couldn’t find the equalizer. South Africa held firm to secure a truly historic victory.

Thanks to this triumph and the Czech Republic’s defeat to Mexico, Bafana Bafana clinched second place in Group A. They qualify for the round of 32 at a World Cup for the first time in their history. South Africa will face Canada in the next round.
