Zlatan Ibrahimović has heaped praise on South Africa following their historic 1‑0 win over South Korea, which secured the nation’s first‑ever World Cup playoff berth.

The former Sweden striker, speaking after the match, expressed his admiration for African football and tipped the continent to make a deep run in the tournament.

“I think this is a signal for FIFA: they should invite more African nations to the World Cup. Nigeria should be here too. African football is something special. They don't make unnecessary passes. As soon as they get the ball, they go straight for the attack. That's the kind of football we need.

“European football is boring, too many back passes and too much tactics. Morocco and South Africa have advanced to the next round. Morocco are the best African team when it comes to ball control. South Africa are the best on the counterattack. I think an African team will reach the semifinals this year.

“I'm happy for them, they've earned it. Africa deserves to be the best. Mbappé should have played for Cameroon, Olise for Nigeria, and the same goes for Vini. I wish the entire African continent success at this tournament.”

Ibrahimović’s remarks have added to the growing sense of momentum surrounding African sides at this World Cup, with both Morocco and South Africa progressing to the knockout rounds. For the continent, it is a moment of pride — and for the neutral fan, perhaps a sign of changing forces in world football.
