Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou experienced night of mixed milestones during the Atlas Lions’ 1-1 draw with Mali on Friday in second round of Group A at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

While the result preserved Morocco’s strong start to the tournament, it also marked both historic personal achievement and the end of remarkable defensive streak for the Al Hilal shot-stopper.

Bounou becomes Morocco’s most capped Goalkeeper at AFCON

By starting against Mali, Bounou made his 13th Africa Cup of Nations appearance becoming the most capped Moroccan goalkeeper in AFCON history.

He moved clear of legendary former keeper Badou Zaki who previously held the record with 12 appearance.

The 33 year old also climbed to eighth place on Morocco’s all-time AFCON appearance list drawing level with:

• Achraf Hakimi
• The late Abdelmajid Dolmy

Clean-sheet streak ends after 9 matches

On the negative side, Bounou conceded his first goal for Morocco after nine consecutive clean sheets bringing end to one of the longest defensive runs in international football.

The goal came from the penalty spot as Mali converted after the ball slipped under Bounou’s arm.

His previous concession dated back to March, during Morocco’s 2-1 victory over Niger in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco’s historic winning run comes to a halt

The draw also ended Morocco’s global record-equalling streak of 19 consecutive victory.

It was first match Morocco failed to win since 26 March 2024 when they were held to goalless friendly draw against Mauritania.

Strong Group-stage position maintained

Despite the setback, Morocco remain in commanding position in Group A having collected four point from two match.
