Argentina have officially booked their place in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, thanks to a brilliant brace from Lionel Messi.

In this clash against Austria, Lionel Messi seized his third opportunity with a trademark side-footed finish, following an assist from Marseille’s own Medina (1-0, 38’). Argentina took the lead just before half-time but were far from safe against an Austrian side comfortable in possession.

Austria came out for the second half with renewed intent, highlighted by a Sabitzer free kick that was brilliantly turned away by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. In control, Argentina sealed the win thanks to Messi (2-0, 90’+5) right at the death.
