2026 World Cup - Algeria: Antar Yahia, Lemmouchia and Matmour take aim at the Greens after Argentina defeat

After Algeria’s heavy 3-0 loss to Argentina in their 2026 World Cup opener, several former internationals have voiced their disappointment. Antar Yahia, Khaled Lemmouchia, and Karim Matmour specifically called out the lack of aggression and questionable attitudes displayed by the Greens.

Algeria’s defeat to Argentina (3-0) in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup continues to make headlines. Speaking on AL24 News, Antar Yahia did not dispute the Albiceleste’s superiority, but lamented the lack of commitment shown by some Algerian players.

Antar Yahia calls out the attitude of the Greens

The former Fennecs captain especially highlighted the lack of intensity off the ball:

“There are attitudes that simply can’t be ignored. You’re playing in a World Cup and, after just fifteen minutes, it’s unacceptable to neglect your duty to press the ball carrier—especially when you’re up against Argentina.”

Nevertheless, the hero of the 2010 World Cup qualification believes Algerian fans can accept defeat when the team gives everything on the pitch.

“Pressing the opponent and showing the required aggression, within the rules, was essential. That was missing during the match. These are the things that frustrate Algerian supporters. When they see you giving your all, even if the result isn’t what they hoped for, they can forgive you. But when there’s no fighting spirit, it becomes unacceptable,” he concluded.

Lemmouchia and Matmour echo similar concerns

Khaled Lemmouchia also underlined how calmly Argentina controlled the match:

“Argentina never panicked; they managed the game with composure. Beyond the football itself, it’s certain player behaviors that need to be reviewed and corrected—quickly.”

Matmour: "We expected much more"

For his part, Karim Matmour lamented the lack of a fighting response from the Algerian squad: “It’s understandable if sometimes you’re not tactically organized, but it’s mainly the attitudes that are abnormal. There was no sense of urgency among the players—even though it’s a World Cup, against Argentina, the world champions, possibly the match of their lives. We expected much more. Argentina prepared for this game.”

Still, despite this worrying setback, Vladimir Petkovic’s men will have a chance to respond on the pitch in the upcoming decisive matches against Jordan and Austria, aiming to revive their qualification hopes.
