A rift in Les Bleus: How Dembélé's rebuttal to Mbappé tests Zidane's authority

France national team manager Zinedine Zidane faces an immediate man management challenge ahead of his first international camp, following public remarks by Ousmane Dembélé directed at Kylian Mbappé regarding the 2026 Ballon d'Or race.

The dispute over the 'Chosen One' label

The friction stems from a recent interview with France Football, in which Real Madrid forward Mbappé reflected on his career trajectory and global expectations.

During the discussion, the French forward remarked:

"I have always been considered the chosen one"

Following Paris Saint Germain’s 1-0 win over Brest in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Dembélé was asked about the upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony, scheduled for October 26 in Paris.

The 2025 winner appeared to directly counter his international teammate's phrasing when speaking to the official Ligue 1 website.

"As you know, I have always worked hard, away from the spotlight, throughout my career.. I didn't say anything, I just worked hard" Dembélé said.

The winger added:

"As I said, I was never the 'chosen one' but I put in a tremendous effort. Last season, I reaped the rewards of that hard work during a wonderful season with Paris Saint Germain. As for this year, we will see what happens. We will take things without pressure"

A test for Zidane's authority

While Mbappé was reportedly taken aback by Dembélé's response, he has opted against issuing a public reply. Instead, the matter is expected to be addressed directly during the upcoming national team camp in September.

The dynamic presents an early test of authority for Zidane in his first squad gathering in charge of Les Bleus. The incoming manager will need to manage the relationship between his two primary attacking figures to ensure personal ambitions do not interfere with squad unity.

Ballon d'Or rivalry in the dressing room

With both players featuring among the contenders for the 2026 honour, individual aspirations are increasingly shaping public narratives.

Dembélé's emphasis on quiet industry stands in sharp contrast to Mbappé's self characterisation as a generational talent.

For Zidane, the priority will be isolating international preparations from the lobbying and campaigning that typically surrounds the final weeks of Ballon d'Or voting.
