The second matchday of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers begins this Monday, September 28, and has several matches in store that could be closely contested. Here is a look at the five fixtures to follow closely.

Zimbabwe - DR Congo

This is the standout fixture in Group E, as the winner will move clear at the top of the table. That would put them in a strong position to qualify for the final tournament.

Ghana – Gambia

Beaten by Côte d’Ivoire (2-0), Ghana must bounce back when they host Gambia on matchday 2 of Group C, the group of death.

The Black Stars will face a Gambian side that did what was necessary against Somalia (2-1) to join the Elephants at the top of Group C on three points.

Zambia – Togo

Zambia lost their opening match to Algeria (3-1), while Togo beat Burundi by the narrowest of margins (1-0).

The last clash between the two teams was a friendly played on May 27, 2026, which Togo won (1-0).

Congo-Brazzaville – Cameroon

After a comfortable victory over Comoros (3-1), Cameroon travel to Congo-Brazzaville to take on the Red Devils, who were beaten by Namibia (1-0) on the opening matchday.

The Indomitable Lions want to make it two wins in a row and consolidate their position at the top of Group G. The head-to-head record favors the Congolese, who have won three times compared with two victories for Cameroon, with one draw.

One of the most memorable meetings remains the 1972 AFCON semi-final, which the Congolese won by a goal to nil.

Guinea-Bissau – Nigeria

This is the clash of the matchday in Group L of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. It pits the two winners from the opening matchday against each other. Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania (2-0), while the Super Eagles beat Burundi (2-1).
